I’ve been working on switching my wardrobe over from a consumer, fast fashion paced closet to a well-curated, thoughtful closet over the last year. I’ve paired my closet down from 600+ items to around 100 items and I am LOVING the ease of getting dressed and the fact that no matter what I put on, I have a GREAT chance of feeling good in it, since I’m only allowing myself to keep or purchase items that I love.

Part of this journey has been being sure to invest in quality pieces that not only mix and match well in my wardrobe, but also will last with wearing them more often. You can find great, quality clothing anywhere if you look hard enough, but whether those pieces are $5 off a clearance rack or $500 at your favorite luxury store, they all deserve to be well-maintained to be sure they last a long time and you can get as much wear out of them as possible.

READ THE CARE TAGS

If you are the type of person who cannot be bothered to read the care tags on items while you’re gearing up to clean them, I urge you to at least read the care tag when purchasing. If you can’t commit to caring for the item properly, you may want to search for a similar item with a less fussy care routine. I am a lucky gal in the fact that my husband does most of our laundry (not all!) He reads the care tag, hands things to dry if need be, and if he has questions about anything- it’s gets hung instead of tossed in the dryer. I can’t thank him enough for that!

TREAT WELL

Some items have to be treated (leather/suede especially!) If they aren’t treated, they will do fine at first, but over time they will begin to discolor, wear out, and you will be sad that you didn’t immediately treat your items. My suggestion is that if you purchase a product that’s a high-quality piece, ask the people at the store how it should be cared for, and if they don’t know (which they should,) you can always pop over to Pinterest or Google search how to care for the item.

Helpful Care Tips:

  • Treat/condition all leather bags, boots, pumps, jackets, etc.
  • Store your quality pieces well!
    • Leather jackets in a hanging dust bag
    • Fancy shoes in boxes so they don’t collect dust
    • Actually USE the dust bags given for purses
    • Fold your cashmere instead of hanging it to prevent stretch
  • Dry clean clothing that says to dry clean even though it’s a bother
  • Use a low heat when drying to reduce shrinkage (even though it takes longer)
  • Remove stains straight away by using a great detergent (see below)
  • Use a detergent that actually CLEANS instead of just smelling good (see below)

LAUNDER RESPONSIBLY

As far as laundry goes, I used to never put any thought into the detergent I used. I wanted something that smelled good, and I didn’t usually care how much it cost or if it even actually CLEANED my clothing. I am SO happy to have found the Member’s Mark Ultimate Clean laundry detergent. Not only does it smell really good, but it gets my clothes really clean. I never have weird residue like I’ve experienced in the past. I’m not as willing to sacrifice quality for scent anymore, but I am SO glad I can have both at an amazing price. Now I know my quality clothing will be cleaned thoroughly and treated well!

Head to Sam’s Club and snatch up this good deal. You won’t regret the purchase. It just makes sense for the price and the cleaning power combined. Treat your quality clothing well and they will last a long, long time.
