Happy National Donut Day – Epic Donut Wedding Cake

It’s National Donut day, and believe me…I want to be celebrating! The truth is, I probably will not this year, but pre-weight loss surgery me would be ALL OVER the donut shops on this day. I just thought I would share my wedding cake with you all.

That’s right, we had a huge tower of donuts as our wedding cake. It was a huge focal point at our reception, was way way cheaper than a cake, and I think our guests loved it (almost as much as we did!)

This brain-child of mine was a quick “YES” from my husband, and was so easy to execute. I found a shelf on a garage sale website and painted it gold to match our decor. You could always use a big cake stand or tiers spread out on a table instead of going vertical like I did. Our stand was about 4 feet tall and housed 250 donuts.

We chose donuts from two well-known bakeries in Indianapolis to make our donut cake. We got 125 yeast from Long’s Bakery, 75 blueberry cake, and 50 cherry chip cake from Boyden’s Bakery. The colors matched with the wedding decor, and the taste was amazing.

We also did a small “groom’s cake” with a smaller 3 tier stand that we had on our sweetheart table. It housed 6 dozen donut holes. (SO DELISH.)

On the morning of the wedding, a few of my bridesmaids and I picked up the fresh donuts, took them to the venue, and stacked them high. We used fresh flowers to decorate the towers, and they turned out SO wonderfully…and even better than I could have imagined.

If you’re considering a donut cake  for your big day- DO IT. And while you’re at it, stop out and have a donut for me today, too! Happy National Donut Day!!

  1. I love this!! The idea to have donuts as your cake is so different. The display looks so pretty. I love donuts and anything blueberry flavors makes me melt, I just can’t have any. That still don’t mean I can’t imagine the taste in my mouth. Great idea. Happy Donuts day to you also.
